If you are experiencing a conflict in any area of your life, you can get free and confidential assistance from a professional mediator.
Mediation does not waive anyone’s right to go to court and is:
- Free
 - Confidential
 - Voluntary
 - Available to everyone, regardless of immigration status

Mediation allows people in conflict to meet with a neutral, professional mediator to discuss their issues and get a better understanding of the situation. A mediator does not take sides or decide who is right or wrong and will work with you to find a path forward to resolve the conflict.
Mediators are trained, neutral professionals who can help tenants and property owners discuss issues such as:
- Unpaid rent
 - Repairs
 - Access
 - Eviction
 - Harassment
 - Lease disputes

Mediation might be a GOOD OPTION if you:
- Have legal and/or nonlegal issues you want to discuss
 - Want to discuss an interpersonal issue
 - Are interested in repairing, improving, or preserving a relationship
 - Are looking to save time and money
 - Have tried to negotiate with someone but are at an impasse
 - Are one of multiple people involved in a dispute
 - Are interested in an alternative to court
 - Are interested in additional support during your court proceeding

Mediation may NOT BE A GOOD OPTION if:
- You and the other person don’t feel safe speaking with each other
 - There is a Full Order of Protection in effect between you and the other person
 - The dispute is with a city agency regarding eligibility for rental assistance, such as
- FHEPS
 - SOTA
 - Section 8
 - SCRIE/DRIE

 - You do not have ANY contact information for the other person involved

The Tenant Helpline can help determine whether mediation is appropriate for your situation. You can get a referral to a Community Dispute Resolution Center of NYC (CDRC) working for the Property Owner-Tenant Mediation Project in your borough.
