You can file a complaint about businesses that store goods on behalf of consumers for a fee in New York City.

Complaints include:

  • Advertising False or Misleading
  • Contract or Billing Dispute
  • Credit Card Limits Not Posted
  • Fees or Surcharges Not Disclosed
  • License or Complaint Sign Not Displayed
  • Lost or Stolen Property
  • Notice Not Provided or Inadequate
  • Overcharge
  • Price Not Posted or Inaccurate
  • Property Damage
  • Unlicensed
  • Wrong Goods

What Happens Next

If you don't include your address or email with your service request, you won't receive follow up. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) will consider your complaint a tip.

If you include your address, DCWP will mail you a complaint form. You must complete and return it to DCWP. If you provide your email address, you'll get the form by email instead. Check your spam folder if you don't see it in your inbox.

Under NYC rules, storage warehouses cannot charge customers: 

  • Increased occupancy fees without at least 60 days prior notice 
  • Property relocation fees without 45 days written notice
  • Rates that were not previously disclosed in the schedule of rates
  • Storage agreement or pickup cancellation fees made before 3:00 PM the previous day

Under NYC rules, storage warehouses must provide the following notices to consumers:

  • Written estimate of costs before accepting or offering to accept property
  • Schedule of rates before entering into a contract
  • List of inventory before accepting property for storage 
  • Notice that additional insurance may be purchased
  • Notice of increased occupancy fee 60 days prior

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) does not accept reports of rude employees. Report this type of complaint to the business.
