Commercial vehicles cannot park on residential streets overnight between 9 PM and 5 AM. Vehicles in violation may be issued a $65 parking violation.
The fine for tractor-trailers is $265 and may increase to $515 if the same vehicle is cited again within a six-month period.
Tractor, Trailer, and Truck Definitions
The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law (VTL) has the following definitions:
Tractor
A motor vehicle:
- Created and used as the power unit
- In combination with either a:
- Semitrailer
- Trailer
- Two such trailers in tandem
Trailer
A trailer:
- Not propelled by its own power
- Towed on public highways by a motor vehicle (except motorcycle sidecars)
- Being towed by a non-rigid support
- Created for and used for other purposes
- Only occasionally drawn by a motor vehicle
Truck
A motor vehicle:
- Designed mainly to move property
- Used mainly to move property
- Maintained mainly to move property
